John Henry Tilden, nace en Van Burenburg, Illinois, el 21 de enero de 1851, y fallece en Denver, Colorado, el 1 de septiembre de 1940. En 1921 publica su obra central Impaired Health: Its Cause And Cure Vol, donde expone los principios y fundamentos de la toxemia como origen de los problemas de salud que afligen a la humanidad. Tilden sistematiza un concepto nuclear de la epistemología, metodología, tecnología y praxiologia de Naturopatía recogiendo la tradición egipcia, grecolatina y oriental donde también singularizan los problemas derivados del concepto de toxemia que Tilden desarrolla en su obra.

Con su teoría de la toxemia, John Tilden reconoció el papel del estrés en la causa de los problemas de salud mucho antes de que esto se convirtiera en una idea aceptada.
Señaló que la salud se altera cuando la energía nerviosa se disipa y el cuerpo ya no es capaz de eliminar adecuadamente los subproductos tóxicos del metabolismo.
El estado resultante de la auto-intoxicación, o toxemia, fue considerado por Tilden como causa básica única de deterioro de la salud. A su juicio, cada enfermedad es un esfuerzo de la naturaleza por eliminar la toxemia, o crisis de la toxemia.
Según Tilden, la energía nerviosa podría convertirse en tóxica al consumir los alimentos equivocados, por comer en exceso, teniendo en cuenta también muchos estimulantes como el café y el alcohol, y también por otras fuentes de estrés, tales como tensiones emocionales y mentales.
En 1910 comenzó a publicar una revista mensual llamada The Stuffed Club, que continuó hasta 1915 cuando cambió el nombre por el de Philosophy of Health, y que pasó a llamarse más tarde, en 1926, Health Review and Critique
